I learned the power of storytelling as a child. One pitch-black winter evening my sister (then 17) and the six-year-old me were trudging through the snow to feed our pony at the barn. I used the spooky atmosphere to tell our grandfather’s story about hearing a mountain lion cry in the woods when he was a boy. I ended with: “You know what Grandpa said it sounded like?” Dramatic pause. “Just like a woman screaming!” It scared the bejabbers out of my sister. Later my dad punished me for it, but I learned I had a powerful secret weapon: Storytelling.

I’ve made my living from storytelling. For 20 years I worked as a reporter, writing features about interesting people and also, as a TV critic, critiquing TV shows, aka other people’s storytelling. Later, providing planned-giving marketing materials for nonprofits, I found that one of the best ways to inspire generosity is to tell the stories of other donors. Today I help individuals and businesses better connect with their target audiences through newsletters, blogs, video scripts and other written means.

You’re a born storyteller, whether you realize it or not. Every day you talk about things that have happened at work, with your family, how your favorite team did in the big game. Those are stories, friend, and we human beings use them to communicate. My point is you already understand how to tell a story verbally. I can teach you how to tell a story in writing to promote your business.

I’m different from other writing-centered marketing experts who use flashy gimmicks and make big promises about overnight success. I don’t do that because in my experience they don’t work. Instead, I become your partner. I use techniques learned during my decades of writing. I make you comfortable with writing about your business and show you how to effectively do it to reach your target audience.

While I’m passionate about what I do, I use a light touch and a sense of humor to make the experience enjoyable for you. This isn’t high school English. We’re going to have fun together telling your story.

If you want to harness the power of storytelling for your business, contact me. I promise never to scare you on a winter’s night … unless you deserve it.

Here’s to your great writing!
